14 Dec Up-Cycled Christmas Trees: Earth-Friendly Holiday Symbols

The up-cycled Christmas trees of the UA Junior High School are the innovative creations of students in response to the call of Pope Francis to protect the environment.

According to Mr. Ken Dizon, Science Academic chairperson, the creation of the Upcycled Christmas Trees is part of the “Alang-Plastikan” advocacy of UAJHS and as part of the celebration of Science Month whose theme is “Environmental Conservation and Preservation of the Ecosystem”.

Made of waste and scrap, the earth-friendly Christmas symbols are now on display at the main lobby/facade of the university. Standing 12 feet tall each, the 4 trees continue to attract students, employees and visitors alike.

Mr. Dizon explained that the officers and members of the student councils per year level worked together to make every tree a masterpice.

“They brainstormed and worked together to create the beautiful christmas trees out of what we consider as useless,”

he said.

This year’s winner is the Coconut Shell Holiday tree of the Grade 9 Council. Coconut shells were carefully put together for the tree. For the ornaments, they used corn husk designed as flowers and ribbons.

2nd Place Winner: Egg-Tray Christmas Tree of the Grade 8 Council

The 2nd place went to the Egg-Tray Christmas Tree of the Grade 8 Council. Used plastic trays were formed into a luminous all-white tree decorated with colorful flowers made of used plastics.

3rd Place Winner: Soda Can Christmas Tree of the Grade 10 Council

Grade 10 Council garnered the 3rd place with their Soda Can Christmas Tree. The green and red tree is a sure eye catcher.

4th Place Winner: Magazine Christmas Tree of the Grade 7 Council

The Grade 7 Council was adjudged as 4th prize with its Magazine Christmas Tree.

This project proves that celebrating the holidays can also be earth-friendly. The up-cycled Christmas Trees are reminders that protecting the environment is also taking care of humanity.
